9-7-10 Tuesday

Status: 8.75/10.  Feeling better each day.

Events:  Lots of traffic up to Hopkins this morning, school’s back in session and everyone is home from the summer.  White cells and neutrophils are both in the normal range (I could tell you that just by the way I feel).  Didn’t need any platelets last Friday because they were holding up so well, and the same was true today.  Nice to be told, “You’re doing fine, go home.”  Don’t have to check back in until Friday.

Comments:  Now that my counts have been good for a week, we’re discontinuing my IV antibiotics.  That’s a relief since infusing them is an affair.  The pressured ball that contains the antibiotic has to be kept in the refrigerator, but taken out a few hours beforehand.  After washing hands and putting on gloves, the port on my Hickman catheter has to be cleaned with alcohol, flushed sterilely with saline, and the antibiotic tubing connected.  After the antibiotic is infused (about an hour) the antibiotic flow is clipped off, the catheter tip swabbed with alcohol, and the line flushed with saline and then heparin to prevent clotting.  This sequence occurs at 8 AM, 3 PM, and 10 PM, and has been going on for a month.  Good to have one less procedure to go through.  Looking forward to a quiet and productive week.

Great news Bruce! Keep up the good work and we are so happy to see things progressing as they should and “relatively” comfortably. Nice to hear also that Rachel is having an easy adjustment-not sure to which school but that’s secondary.
Bryan is off to Tulane for 5 weeks already-we miss him but so far so good-he seems to be mixing the academics, the extra-curricular and the social very well-we are proud and happy parents. Alexa is driving (careful on the roads!) and enjoying being a junior-if that’s possible…
All our love and good thoughts.
    Happy New Year.
